CoHousing: an antidote to modern day isolation?

A new style of living is becoming increasingly popular in the Bay Area, and across the country. It’s called cohousing, and it’s sort of like dorm-style living for adults -- only instead of a room, you get a house. The concept originated in Denmark. Its growth in the United States is thanks in large part to Charles Durrett. He’s the author of CoHousing: A Contemporary Approach to Housing Ourselves. The book has helped inspire more than a hundred cohousing communities across the country, including half a dozen in the East Bay. More recently, Durrett wrote Senior CoHousing: A Community Approach to Independent Living. KALW’s Ben Trefny spoke with Durrett to learn more.

Thank you Ben, Thank you Charles Durrett.
For folks who are interested in learning more about Cohousing, please visit the Cohousing Association's (Coho/US) website at http://www.cohousing.org.
Also worthy of note is the National Cohousing Conference is in Boulder CO in June - read more about all the wonderful offerings at http://www.cohousing.org/2010/overview.
If you are in the environs of Washington DC, consider a regional conference at the University of Maryland in College Park, http://www.midatlanticcohousing.org/conf/Conference.html
Another popular way to learn more about all things Cohousing, and to meet like-minded folks, is to sign-up for one of Coho/US' community bus tours and "traveling workshops". Several are scheduled in different parts of the country, and you can read more about them at http://www.cohousing.org/tours.
Other community events are posted at http://www.cohousing.org/tours_events
Thanks again for the interview, Ben
