A haunting portrait of the foreclosure crisis

California's financial crisis has forced many people into homelessness and many people have abandoned their homes. While fewer people are foreclosing upon their homes in month-by-month and year-by-year studies, the city of Stockton still has one of the highest home foreclosure rates in the country. It’s ranked at or near the top since the mortgage meltdown began.
Photographer Kirk Crippens became curious about what went wrong in Stockton. So he used his camera to capture the shrapnel — scenes that changed him forever.
KALW's Hana Baba visited Crippens at his exhibit entitled “Foreclosure, USA: The Great Recession” when it opened in San Francisco earlier this year. The exhibit goes on display again, tomorrow, so we thought we’d share it with you again.
The Foreclosure USA exhibit opens tomorrow at the University of San Francisco High School's Jackson Street Gallery, and is showing through December 3rd. You can also see Kirk’s photos online.
This interview originally aired on March 10, 2010.
