How earthquake-ready are you? Let us know!

Exactly 22 years ago at 5:04pm, the Loma Prieta earthquake hit San Francisco. Maybe you remember what it was like when the shaking started, right before Game 3 of that year’s World Series, between the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland A’s.

We all know that another quake could strike the Bay Area at any moment. But how prepared are we really? To answer this question, KALW is launching a new project in collaboration with Mobile Commons. We’re mapping quake readiness around the Bay Area, and we want to hear from you.

What are you doing to prepare? To tell us, just text the word “KIT” to 30644, and follow the prompts. And watch the responses in real time on our Earthquake Preparedness map!

Learn what to do during an earthquake, whether you're at home, at work, at school or just out and about. Taking the proper actions, such as Drop, Cover, and Hold On, can save lives and reduce your risk of death or injury. During earthquakes, drop to the floor, take cover under a sturdy desk or table, and hold on to it firmly. Be prepared to move with it until the shaking stops. japon

The earthquake occurred at 5:04 p.m. and measured 6.9 on the Richter scale, which assigns numbers to earthquakes based on the strength of the shaking. The temblor occurred 11 miles below the surface and affected a 40-mile section of the San Andreas Fault. The seismic activity caused the plates to shift several feet. The U. S. Geological Survey placed the epicenter (the precise point underground where the earthquake occurred) in the Santa Cruz Mountains, specifically under a peak named Loma Prieta. how to stop smoking weed now

The more numerous earthquakes smaller than magnitude 5 reported by national seismological observatories are measured mostly on the local magnitude scale, also referred to as the Richter scale.

Earthquakes are measured using observations from seismometers. The moment magnitude is the most common scale on which earthquakes larger than approximately 5 are reported for the entire globe. The more numerous earthquakes smaller than magnitude 5 reported by national seismological observatories are measured mostly on the local magnitude scale, also referred to as the Richter scale. Surrey house clearance
