King Tut Spoiler Alert: The Big Mask Is Missing
For people who saw the King Tut exhibit in San Francisco 30 years ago, the two memories most mentioned are the long lines to get in, and the incredible gold and blue death mask at the end of the exhibit.
It’s safe to predict that the lines will be even more impressive this time around. But before you join the throngs at the deYoung Museum, waiting to shell out your $27.50 admission fee (plus $10 general admission for non-members), you need to know this: Neither that famous gold and blue death mask, nor the golden coffin, are part of the current exhibit.
But the mask is featured on the street posters, and on the cover of the exhibition booklet, right? You are led to believe so. While it does have the same fine level of craftsmanship, what is actually depicted is a greatly enlarged image of a canopic jar, or “coffinette,” created to hold the king’s liver. It is about a foot and a half tall. It is not the 24-pound golden creation that protected the head and shoulders of the dearly departed pharaoh.
The famous mask was more than 3,300 years old when it toured in 1979. But now that it’s 3,330 years old, the piece is considered too fragile to leave Egypt. Well, everything wears out eventually, even the eternal protection of a finely crafted magical mask. Make no mistake; this exhibit is still a rare opportunity to view many impressive examples of artistic craftsmanship. Just don’t expect to see the piece you probably most anticipated seeing.
